The 2009 Winners are...
 

1.    Business /Corporate Health Promoter presented by James Miller Editor of the  Penticton Herald

 

Localmotive Organic Food Operative 

 

Through their organic produce business Localmotive is bringing greater awareness to our residents on how to eat well and reduce the damage to the environment in which we live, breathe and play. Localmotive is partnering with School district 53 in Oliver on the Farm to School Salad Bar project. Hundreds of kids benefit from eating  Fresh and local produce through this program. To give kids a better understanding of where their food comes from they get to visit the farms whose produce they are eating. Localmotive has worked hard at building bridges with organisations such as Ooknakane Friendship Centre and all Indian Bands to make produce available to these groups.

 

2.    First Nations Champion presented by Joyce Resin from the Healthy Heart Society of BC

Awarded to a company/individual/organization that has developed or introduced a product or service which enhances the health and fitness of the First Nations of the South Okanagan

Brenda Baptiste 

 

As a member of the Osoyoos Indian Band, Brenda graduated as a Registered Nurse specializing in Aboriginal health with a focus on community.  During her tenure with the Osoyoos Indian Band, she developed and implemented community-based health programs, including the establishment of the Nk’Mip Home & Community Care service which focuses on adult in-home care clients dealing with acute and chronic illness.  She was instrumental in establishing the Osoyoos Indian Band’s first Community Health Nursing program, Headstart program, AIDS/HIV and Perinatal Care program.  She fostered a collaborative working relationship with off-reserve health services in acute care, public health, mental health and addiction services.  Brenda also played a leading role in the planning and development of the Nk’Mip Resource Centre – a facility that houses a multi-disciplinary health and social services department that continues to meet the needs of the Osoyoos Indian Band community.  

 

3.    Health & Fitness Community Leader Presented by Dr Gerry Karr President of the  Rotary Club of Penticton  

Awarded to a company/individual or organization that has demonstrated exemplary service and dedication to enhancing the health and fitness of the citizens of the South Okanagan.

Cathie Lauer

Has traveled to many communities in BC creating greater awareness of Breast Cancer prevention and detection. She was the founding member of the Survivorship South Okanagan Breast Cancer Survivorship Dragon Boat Team.  As a result of her vision we now have 12 to 14 Dragon Boat teams in Penticton and Summerland. She has also raised such strong awareness that it ultimately resulted in the new mammography machine.  Her focus continues to be Breast Cancer Awareness.

 

 

4.    Health & Fitness Educator presented by Mayor Ashton of the City of Penticton

Awarded to a company/individual/organization who has provided exemplary on-going health and fitness education that is enhancing the health and fitness of the citizens of the South Okanagan.

Dr. Sandy Congram

Through her work with the art and science of healing touch she has brought together a very committed team of Healing Touch Practitioners who offer their services weekly to the public at the United Church as well as at various areas of Penticton Regional Hospital, and in the community. Sandy's work with healing touch has evolved into the formation of the Okanagan Valley Healing Society, which brings together a team of health professionals and complimentary medicine practitioners, who are examining and learning how to utilize and enhance the positive energy of Penticton and area .

5.    Health and Wellness Provider  presented by Andrzej Jerome of Pfizer

Awarded to a company/ individual  or organization that has demonstrated exemplary service and dedication to enhancing the health and wellness of our community

Mary Tulk

Is dedicated to the awareness and education on diabetes because she also has diabetes and can actually say “I know how you feel”.  She works with adults but also with the local paediatricians who see children with diabetes. Diabetes Education is huge in the big picture of health care. Mary educates individuals to prevent manage and live a fulfilling life with diabetes and she really walks the talk.

 

6.    Seniors Initiative Leader Presented by  Derek Badger of Janssen-Ortho

Awarded to a company/individual or organization who has developed a program, product or service  that has enhanced the health and fitness of the senior citizens of the South Okanagan

Anna McIvor

Anna has kept seniors active with her exercise classes.  Her sense of humour is a piece of her success She always has a smile and some special words of wisdom with her classes.  She has also had an active "clogging" group as well as a "line-dancing" group who perform at local festivals. Anna is also actively involved in Emergency Preparedness for Penticton and her organizational skills are very evident.

Anna motivates Seniors to be more active by leading by example and making the exercise fun!

 

7.    Youth Initiative Leader Presented by Honourable Dr Gerry Karr on behalf of ActNow BC

Awarded to a company/individual or organization who has developed a program, product or service that has enhanced the health and fitness of the youth of the South Okanagan

Carol Flynn

Is an inspiration and role model to the youth of our community. She is a Youth Coordinator at the Penticton Community Center but what she provides to the youth of this area goes beyond a job description. Carol is not a no person but always looks for ways to improve and enhance all that she takes on. She brings an openness and authenticity that the youth today gravitate towards.  She works tirelessly on making programs affordable so that everyone gets to play. She comes with too many talents to list but is just such an excellent role model and motivational speaker for our youth.
